When shopping for solar screens, one of the biggest decisions is choosing the right solar screen fabric color. I use premium Twitchell Textilene fabric in six popular colors, available in both 80% and 90% shade levels.
Here are the colors I offer:
- Black
- Chocolate
- Mocha (very popular in Austin)
- Grey
- Beige
- Stucco
Mocha was specially developed for Central Texas homes. It pairs beautifully with Austin’s limestone, sandstone, and most brick exteriors.

Out of any of these six solar screen fabric colors, I can make 80% solar screens and 90% solar screens.
Each of these fabric colors is available in either the 80% or 90% shade option.
The Mocha fabric is unique to us and was made specifically for the Austin area. Austin homes use a lot of locally quarried sandstone and Austin limestone. The Mocha color pairs beautifully with both.
Does one fabric color work better than the others?
All of my solar screen fabric colors perform the same when they are the same shade density. Whether you choose 80% or 90% shade level, the heat and UV blocking performance is determined by the shade percentage — not the color.
However, when it comes to maintenance and appearance over time, some colors are definitely better than others.
Best colors for low maintenance (Recommended for most Austin homes):
These darker colors do an excellent job of hiding dirt, dust, and pollen that accumulate over time.
Lighter colors that show dirt faster:
- Grey
- Beige
- Stucco
These can look great when first installed but usually require more frequent cleaning with a pressure washer to stay looking their best.

Watch this short video to see how much dirt and grime can build up on a lighter colored Beige solar screen over time:
This is a great example of why we usually recommend darker colors (Black, Chocolate, or Mocha) for most Austin homes. Lighter colors like Beige and Grey show dirt much faster and require more frequent cleaning to keep them looking good.
Will one solar window screen fabric color last longer than any of the others?
No. All six solar screen fabric colors I offer are made from the same high-quality Twitchell Textilene material. As long as you choose the same shade percentage (80% or 90%), they all have the same expected lifespan — typically 15+ years in Austin’s intense sun and weather.
The color itself does not affect durability. What matters most for long-term appearance is choosing a color that hides dirt well. That’s why Black, Chocolate, and Mocha are the most popular choices for Austin homeowners.
Will one sun control fabric density last longer than the others?
No. Both the 80% and 90% shade fabrics are made from the exact same high-quality Twitchell Textilene material. They have the same expected lifespan — typically 15+ years or more in Austin’s harsh sun.
The main difference between 80% and 90% is how much light and heat they block, not how long they last.
- 80% solar screens – Allow more light and visibility while still providing excellent sun protection.
- 90% solar screens – Block more heat and light for maximum sun control.
Both densities are extremely durable.
Will the sun-shade fabrics fade?
With confidence, I can tell you that these fabrics hold up extremely well. Over a 10-year period, you should see no noticeable fading even in direct Texas sunlight.
In fact, I have many installations around Austin that are now 20 years old and still look great. As I drive through neighborhoods on my daily routes, I regularly see homes I screened many years ago — and the solar screens still look sharp and new.
This long-term performance is one of the reasons I only use premium Twitchell Textilene fabric. It’s truly built for the intense Austin sun.

Learn About Replacement ScreensHow long will the solar screen fabrics last?
Our premium Twitchell Textilene solar screen fabrics are built to last a long time in Austin’s tough climate. With proper installation, you can reasonably expect 15 to 20+ years of service from your solar screens.
I regularly see my own installations from 10 to 20 years ago that still look excellent. The fabric resists fading, stretching, and degradation far better than cheaper alternatives.
The key factors that help them last are:
Occasional cleaning with a pressure washer (especially lighter colors)
Using high-quality Twitchell fabric (80% or 90%)
Professional installation with strong aluminum frames
Do not use harsh chemicals on them. Doing so, will eventually have an impact on the PVC coating.
Will a darker fabric get hotter than a lighter color, therefore not work as well?
This is a very common question. The short answer is: No, it does not affect performance.
Yes — a darker fabric (Black, Chocolate, or Mocha) will absorb more heat and feel hotter to the touch when the sun is shining directly on it. However, because the solar screens are installed on the outside of your windows, that extra heat stays outside and does not transfer into your home.
The amount of heat and UV rays blocked is determined by the shade percentage (80% or 90%), not the color. So a dark 90% screen will actually keep your house cooler than a light-colored 80% screen.
Bottom line: Choose the color you like best for appearance and maintenance. The performance difference between colors is negligible.
What solar screen fabric color is best?
FFor most Austin homes, my top recommendation is Mocha.
Why Mocha is usually the best choice:
- Blends beautifully with Austin’s common limestone, sandstone, and brick exteriors
- Hides dirt, dust, and pollen very well
- Has a warm, natural look that enhances curb appeal
- One of our most popular colors year after year
Real Austin Examples of Mocha Solar Screens:
Other strong options:
- Black solar screens – Bold modern look, best at hiding grime
- Chocolate – Rich look that hides dirt well
Lighter colors (Beige and Stucco) can look nice initially but show dirt faster.
Final Tip: If you want the best combination of appearance, low maintenance, and long-term performance in Austin’s climate, go with Mocha.

View Patio Roller ShadesDo you recommend any solar screen fabric colors over others?
For ease of maintenance, darker colored fabrics are definitely better.
I always aim to recommend solar screen colors that complement your home’s existing exterior — whether it’s Austin limestone, sandstone, brick, or siding. The goal is a natural, attractive look that enhances your curb appeal while staying easy to maintain long-term.
Mocha is my top recommendation for most Austin homes because it does both exceptionally well.
Mocha Solar Screen with Champagne Frame
Here’s a real Austin installation showing Mocha fabric paired with a Champagne frame. This combination is very popular because it complements most brick and stone homes while hiding dirt well.

I often like to add subtle warmth and color with the right fabric choice.
For example, on this white limestone home, the Mocha fabric beautifully complements the gold flecks in the limestone while also working well with the brown brick.
The home’s trim is champagne colored, so I matched it with a Champagne frame. The combination of Mocha fabric + Champagne frame creates a sharp, elegant look that’s become one of my favorite pairings on Austin homes.
Example of Black Fabric with Champagne Frame
Here’s a sharp Austin installation showing Black solar screen fabric paired with a Champagne frame. This is a very popular combination for homeowners who want maximum heat blocking, excellent dirt-hiding ability, and a clean, modern look that complements most brick and stone homes.
We also now have black framing for our solar screens that would have looked good on this home.
Example of Mocha Fabric with Brown Frame

Here’s a nice Austin installation showing Mocha solar screen fabric paired with a Brown frame.
This combination works very well on homes with brown or darker trim, giving a warm, cohesive look while still providing excellent dirt-hiding performance.
Example of Black Fabric with Brown Frame
This home features a grey brick exterior with black trim. We used Black solar screen fabric paired with a Brown frame to create a cohesive and sharp look.
The Black fabric was an excellent choice here as it provides maximum heat and UV protection while hiding dirt extremely well. The Brown frame complements the home’s trim perfectly, creating a clean, unified appearance that many homeowners love.
We can now use black frame.
Should I get a light or dark solar screen fabric color?
For most Austin homes, I recommend going with a darker color.
Why darker colors are usually better:
- Black, Chocolate, and Mocha hide dirt, dust, and pollen much better
- They stay looking clean for years with less maintenance
- They still provide excellent outward visibility
Lighter colors (Beige, Grey, Stucco) look nice when first installed but show grime faster and require more frequent cleaning.
My top recommendation: Mocha — it gives you great dirt-hiding ability plus a warm look that complements most Austin stone and brick homes.

Will one color give better privacy than the other?
No. All colors provide very similar privacy when they are the same shade percentage.
90% fabrics give noticeably better privacy than 80% fabrics. Darker colors (Black, Chocolate, and Mocha) offer slightly better evening privacy when interior lights are on.
How about evening privacy, will one of the solar screen fabric colors provide better evening privacy than the others?
No — not significantly.
All solar screen colors give very similar privacy when they are the same shade percentage (80% or 90%).
However, in the evening, when your interior lights are on:
- Darker colors (Black, Chocolate, and Mocha) do provide slightly better privacy because they reflect less light back outward.
- 90% shade fabrics offer noticeably better evening privacy than 80% fabrics, regardless of color.
Bottom Line: If evening privacy is a high priority for you, I recommend going with a 90% shade in one of the darker colors — preferably Mocha, Black, or Chocolate.
